Getting Business

Once you’ve gotten your license, you still have a lot of work to do.  Some people think real estate agents don’t do anything, but it’s not true!  Customers are not normally handed to you.  You have to jump into action!  Don’t wait until you know everything, because that day never comes.

Some companies may offer a mentorship program to help you get started.  This can be extremely helpful, but look at the terms of the program very carefully.  You will probably have to share your commissions, and in some cases, more than half.  You may be better off doing something informally.  Learn whom you can trust in the office as soon as you start working.  If you don’t feel confident on your first listing appointment or buyer meeting, you can take an experienced agent with you.  You should still expect to split the commission, but you will not be locked into any program, and half of something is better than all of nothing.

Most companies will offer some kind of training program, either in a class or with hands-on training, or a combination of both.  Just like the school, there will be a lot of information to learn, but if you haven’t gotten a lesson you need in order to start working, ask your manager for assistance.  If you don’t utilize lessons as you learn them, you will forget them before you learn the next lesson.
