Getting Your License

After school is over, you will have to take a state pre-licensing exam.  Private companies, contracted out by the state, administer the exams.  One testing service normally handles the entire state.  Your real estate school can tell you which service is used in your state, and what needs to be done to prepare for that particular exam.  Exams may be given once or twice a month or every business day.  They may be written or computerized.  It will normally be broken into two portions, one for state law and one for national questions.  Each state has its own guidelines for minimum passing scores and how frequently you can take the exam.  You cannot get your license until you pass both portions of the exam.

You also cannot get your license until you join a company.  In other words, don’t expect to take the exam and then go off on your own.  Each state has a requirement for a certain amount of experience before you will be allowed to do that.  They don’t want someone who doesn’t know what they are doing in charge of a company.      continued
